The South African International Maritime Institute (SAIMI) has established itself as a great enabler in the field of marine robotics empowered research. Senior lecturer, and PHD candidate in the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) faculty of engineering, Robyn Verrinder, believes that SAIMI’s investment into UCT’s Marine Robotics Centre allows South Africa to maintain a position of a world leader into research in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean.

“This is the challenge; how do we define the Ocean Economy? What are the critical areas? These are the aspects we need to look at as we right-size,” Mtati asked the stakeholders from SAMSA, DHET, DFFE, CoCT, NUM, and UCT, who among others, were involved in the discussions.

Atop a disused coal mine in the Upper Silesian city of Katowice in Poland, a city within a city was constructed. This city, centered around the Spodek Stadium, was the home to thousands of delegates who descended upon this turn-of-the-century city for UN Habitat's 11th World Urban Forum.
